Poetry Readings • 1976-82

At a time when there were few poetry events in the region, I organised a series of  readings over several years, held at the Jellicoe Theatre and Poole Arts Centre, with the following poets: Jeff Nuttall, Brian Patten, Roger McGough, Frances Horovitz, Michael Horovitz, Ivor Cutler, Angie Gilligan.

An informal evening that appealed to a wide range of ages and backgrounds, and nowhere was informality more apparent than in the reading by Michael Horovitz, who accompanied some of his poems on the kazoo and interrupted others to comment on particular ideas or phrases. The loss of fluency was not always made up for by improved communication and his seemingly diffident, throw-away style of reading was at a disadvantage when followed by Brian Patten and Ivor Cutler, two widely contrasting poets who each have a voice and a presence that compes attention. Mr Patten’s images are warm, and one might have thought, almost too romantic in such a cut-and-dried age, but his sincerity won many followers. Mr Cutler, on the other hand, specializes in the laconic understatement that explodes into meaning a split-second later.   (Martin Blyth, Western Gazette)
